Ava's bookcase #1

Even since I was a child, I've loved to read. I can escape into a good book and can spend hours browsing a book store. I think I must get it from my mum as she has a huge collection of books, old and new, that I have loved to read every once in a while.

I hope it's something that I can pass on to Ava, I already cannot wait until she's old enough to have the Harry Potter books as her bedtime story, that will be a great day! Until then I'm slowly building up her book collection, although I'll admit sometimes they are more for me than they are for her but I'm enjoying reading the stories to her and she's enjoying the pictures.

I thought I'd introduce a new feature, every month I will review a new book that we have enjoyed, a sort of book club if you will. I'd love for you to share some of your favourites with us.

Recently my mum bought this one for Ava:

Five Minutes Peace by Jill Murphy

Winner of the Parents Magazine "Best Book for Babies" award

I think it's a book all mothers will be able to identify with! I remember these books as a child and had a few of "The Large Family" books, they're currently celebrating their 25th year anniversary which makes me feel old! I like how the story is amusing for the parents reading it as well as for the child. Poor Mrs Large, she only wants to have five minutes peace and her three children just won't leave her alone, eventually jumping into the bath with her. I must admit I actually laughed out loud at one point, I think the irony of this story was lost on me as a child but now I'm a mum I love it in a different way.

The pictures are brilliant, very bright and fun. I love all the small details such as the rollers in Mrs Large's "hair". As Ava is still a bit young for this book it's nice to have "busy" images as I like to call them with a lot going on, I'm able to ask her to point to various items.

The words are big enough for older children to be able to read themselves and the story is very funny.

I think the "Large Family" books are lovely for children of any age, the colourful pictures will enthrall the younger children whilst the story will amuse older ones and lets be honest who doesn't love a story about elephants.

You can purchase the "Large Family" books from all good bookstores priced at £6.99 each.

Do you have any favourite books from your childhood that you think we should read?
